HR Blunders of the World

I recently went to Antigua and saw a sign titled "Eight Blunders of the World". The list was as follows:

Wealth without work Pleasure without conscience
Knowledge without character Commerce without morality
Science without humanity Worship without sacrifice
Politics without principle Rights without responsibilities

It made me think of the "HR Blunders" that are so easy to make but experience shows that they are not good practice and not sustaianable.  I discussed this with 3 colleagues from my Asda days and we put our list together - it wasn't difficult as we have all been guilty of some or all of them at some time!!

So with thanks to Cheryl Pate, Dorothy Matthews & Ruth Smith our list is:

1) Doing the line manager's job for them

2) Not keeping People / Commercial / Legal in balance - having a wobbly "three legged stool"

3) Talking in HR jargon

4) Getting too caught up in tea, toilets, tears & tantrums

5) Believing that happy people always do good work

6) Hiding behind the rule book or policies

7) Not having a people plan

8) Having a people plan that is not aligned to the business plan

9) Getting bogged down in admin

10)  Failing to convince the business not to cut the training budget as a cost cutting exercise during periods of economic downturn

Have you got any to add - if so please add to the guest book or forum!!
