The Three Legged Stool

Employee Relations is an area that scares the line so it is area where HR can add value. It is important though not to become the worst type of HR person who just relies on the law and forgets the business and individual needs.

My approach to Employee Relations is the "Three Legged Stool". Every time there is an issue a good HR person will consider the following three legs of the stool:

                  1)   People                    2) Commercial                      3) Legal

In order to keep the stool balanced all three legs must be considered. For example on redundancies there is a legal process to be followed but commercially it has to be done in the most cost effective way. In addition the person affected must be allowed to leave with "their head held high" and it is also vital to be concerned about those left behind as well. If the legal process alone is followed individuals involved may feel bitter and it may cost more than it should have done.

Also, in a redundancy situation the people leg of the stool may "wobble" because people spend time on the people who are leaving & do not consider those who are staying. The often feel insecure & confused as well.

By considering the three legged stool for those that go and for those who stay the approach will be much more rounded and the business will be in better shape for the future
