Organisation

Tom Peters says:

"55% of an organisation's effectiveness is down to it's organisation structure"

The principle of this is that structure is responsible for more than half of an organisation's success. If the structure is right people will thrive. If it is wrong it is likely to disillusion good people & allow poor performers to hide.

Good structure enables people to deliver and must be in balance with the rest of the COPS model.

The most important rules to keep in mind when reviewing organisation structure are:

  • Never write structure around people. Write structure separately and then put the people  into the structure - recognising it might not be a perfect fit but at least you have got the right structure
  • Always analyse accountabilities from the front line first and make sure there is substantial differentiation
  • Make sure authority matches accountability
  • Check that systems support the new structure
  • Once structure change has been agreed - put it in quickly and then work on msking it work
